FOAMSUPA measuring guides

Measure and choose with confidence

Practical guidance for measuring foam, checking a cushion cover and preparing a custom foam quote.

Measure twice. The custom quote calculator provides an estimate for rectangular pieces. Delivery is quoted separately, and the final specification must be approved before production.

Choose one measurement unit

You can enter dimensions in millimetres, centimetres or inches. Use the same unit for length, width and thickness, and avoid rounding until you have checked the final dimensions.

10 mm= 1 cm
25.4 mm= 1 inch
100 cm= 1 metre

How to measure a rectangular piece

  1. Remove the existing foam where possible. Measure the foam itself on a flat surface rather than measuring only the outside of a filled cushion.
  2. Measure the length. Record the longest edge from end to end.
  3. Measure the width. Record the edge running across the piece at its widest point.
  4. Measure the thickness. Measure the vertical depth without pressing or compressing the foam.
  5. Repeat each measurement. Check more than one point because older foam and covers can distort with use.

Do not add or subtract an allowance unless the product instructions or our written quotation tells you to. If the required piece is tapered, curved or otherwise irregular, contact us before placing an order.

Measuring an empty cushion cover

Remove the insert, close the zip and lay the cover naturally on a flat surface without stretching it. Measure between the seams for length and width. For a boxed cover, measure the border panel from seam to seam for the depth.

  • Do not include piping beyond the seams in the finished dimensions.
  • Check the centre and both ends if the cover is worn or misshapen.
  • Tell us whether the measurements came from the foam or the empty cover.
  • For unusual shapes, contact us about a paper template and the details needed before production.

Match the shape and intended use

Dimensions are only part of the specification. Before choosing a product, check its stated firmness, density, intended application and any cover or finishing options. Tell us how the foam will be used if you are unsure which available option is appropriate.

Important: Product descriptions and an approved written quotation take priority over this general guide. Foam can have normal manufacturing tolerances, which should be stated on the relevant product or quotation.

Final checklist before ordering

  • Length, width and thickness have each been measured twice.
  • The selected unit is correct: mm, cm or inches.
  • The shape, quantity, foam option and any cover choice are correct.
  • Access, doorway and delivery constraints have been considered for bulky items.
  • The final custom specification and separate delivery price will be reviewed before payment.
