How to Measure Replacement Sofa Cushions

05 September 2026

Replacement sofa cushions work best when the dimensions come from careful measurements rather than an estimate from the outside of a filled seat. Use a firm tape measure, write every dimension down and repeat each check.

1. Decide what you are measuring

If possible, remove the old foam and place it on a flat surface. Old foam can become compressed or rounded, so measure several points. If the foam is unavailable, empty the zipped cover, close the zip and lay the cover naturally without stretching it.

2. Measure length, width and depth

  1. Length: measure the longest edge from seam to seam or end to end.
  2. Width: measure across the cushion at the widest point.
  3. Depth: measure the vertical thickness without pressing the foam.

For a boxed cover, measure the border panel between the seams. Do not include piping beyond the seam line.

3. Check the furniture space

Measure the seating platform as a cross-check. Note rounded fronts, angled backs, cut-outs and gaps between cushions. Rectangular custom quote tools are not suitable for complex shapes unless the final specification is reviewed separately.

4. Record the intended use

Tell the supplier whether the foam is for everyday seating, occasional seating, a bench or another application. Compare firmness, foam grade, cover and care information on the product page.

Final checklist

  • Measure each dimension twice.
  • Use one unit throughout: mm, cm or inches.
  • State whether you measured the foam, empty cover or furniture.
  • Check access and delivery space for large pieces.
  • Review the final specification before payment.
