How to Measure a Bench or Window Seat Cushion
05 September 2026
A well-fitted bench cushion should sit securely without blocking lids, doors, radiators or nearby furniture. Start with the usable seating surface, then check the intended finished height.
Measure the base
Measure the longest length and widest depth of the flat seating area. Repeat the measurements at the front, middle and back because alcoves and walls may not be square. Use the smallest safe dimension where the space narrows.
Choose the thickness
Check the available height beneath windows, tables and armrests. Consider how the cushion thickness changes the seating position. Compare the foam grade and intended use on the product page rather than selecting by thickness alone.
Allow for moving parts
Storage benches need enough clearance for lids and hinges. Cube-storage benches may have nearby doors or baskets. Mark any area where a cushion would catch or overhang.
Measure an existing cover
Remove the old insert, close the zip and lay the cover naturally on a flat surface. Measure between seams without stretching. For a boxed cover, measure the border panel from seam to seam.
Complex shapes
Bay windows, angled walls and curved fronts need more than three dimensions. Ask what drawing or paper template is required before ordering. Label the front, back, left and right so the orientation is unambiguous.
Final checklist
- Measure twice in one unit.
- Check the narrowest points.
- Confirm finished height and clearance.
- State indoor or outdoor use.
- Review foam and cover specifications.
