Foam Firmness and Density Explained for Cushions
05 September 2026
Firmness and density are often treated as the same thing, but they describe different properties. Understanding the difference helps you compare cushion foam more confidently.
What is foam firmness?
Firmness describes how hard or soft the foam feels when compressed. A firmer grade resists pressure more strongly; a softer grade compresses more readily. The correct feel depends on the application, cushion thickness, person using it and construction around the foam.
What is foam density?
Density describes the amount of material in a given volume of foam. It can be associated with durability and construction, but a higher-density foam is not automatically the firmest-feeling option. Compare the supplier's stated grade and intended use rather than choosing from one number alone.
Common applications
- Sofa and chair seats: usually need supportive foam designed for repeated seating.
- Back cushions: may use a softer or more flexible construction.
- Benches and window seats: require a balance of support, thickness and available height.
- Heavy-duty upholstery: recon foam is often selected where strong support is the priority.
- Mattress toppers: are designed to change surface feel rather than repair a failed mattress.
Thickness changes the feel
The same foam grade can feel different at different thicknesses. A thin pad over a hard base behaves differently from a deeper cushion. Check the finished seat height and whether the cover will accommodate the selected depth.
Before ordering
Read the product specification, intended use and dimensions. If you are uncertain, describe the furniture, current cushion and desired result when requesting advice. Comfort is subjective, so no general chart can guarantee an individual preference.
